Peace be the Journey

Spiritual Development : thewayofthepilgrim.com

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’. Acts 17:26

For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. Romans 8:29

We are created in God’s image. That means we are spiritual beings first, and physical beings second. Not the other way around. Spiritual development is the process through which we grow in our knowledge, understanding, application and appreciation of this fact. In many ways we are mere infants taking our first steps toward dad. We are learning to enjoy the safety and security of lying in Mom’s arms. We are like feral children learning to come inside the house and take our place at the table as members of God’s family. There is so much to learn, grow and experience. Most of us, even many mature Christians, don’t really know how to meditate, be still, be silent or listen to God’s gentle whispers. Many have never left their spiritual neighborhoods let alone explored the spiritual realms God has set for us to discover. The pilgrims Journey is filled with discovery, enlightenment, empowerment and excitement. There are also many perils. We live in a fallen world surrounded by traps and snares that would entangle and destroy us as spiritual people. Our world is filled with negative spiritual influence as well as many things that corrupt and desensitize us leaving us unspiritual and clueless. Most of society around us has abandoned what is spiritual and sacred, and we live in a time where children are shot in schools and older people are murdered even while they pray. The world is in desperate need of a spiritually strong and mature people to be a light, a refuge of hope. Our world does not need another political system, ideology or charismatic leader. We have a clear path out of trouble and we already have our leader, JESUS. He came to show us the way the truth and the life that we might shine brightly in this universe. Jesus left so that the Holy Spirit could come and help us along in our developmental journey (JN 14-16). Our world needs real examples to follow and be inspired by. The Justice league and Avengers only reveal our desperate yearnings. Our community needs Heroes who are simply people filled with Love, Grace, Mercy who walk in the truth and are living free to rise above the social trash heaps that are drowning so many in gossip, scandals, lies and fake realities. It needs strong woman and men of every race and background who are filled with the spirit of God and reflect his image that can speak up fearlessly for truth and love. This means that at 35 years in the faith there is still much for me to grow and learn and develop. It means God is not finished with me, with you or us yet ! It means the most exciting and amazing days are still ahead!  I invite you to join us on the pilgrims journey to spiritual development. I will be posting articles and Bible studies that will help us to grow and become all that God has called us to be. You will find them in “Deep diving” under the “Spirituality” banner. Please feel free to send articles, studies , scriptures that have helped you and that might help others to Carrillostudent@mac.com . Peace be the Journey!

  1. Very cool. I’m studying this topic too!! I see using the spiritual disciplines to increase our awareness of what we have in Christ. The journey is more about awareness than accomplishment; awakening than achievement.

  2. I love your emphasis on continual growth and seeking more and more to know God better and better, which changes us from the inside out and produces the good fruit of the Spirit. You’re right – we are primarily spiritual beings who must learn to live our lives on this physical earth as new creations. Very exciting stuff! I’m so grateful to be a spiritual pilgrim on a spiritual pilgrimage! Keep going, Robert! I’m right with you!
